The adventure began with a night in Windhoek, Namibia's capital city, at the Windhoek Luxury Suites after flying in from Cape Town. This elegant accommodation provided a perfect blend of modern amenities and local charm, offering a comfortable start to the journey. The suites featured stylish interiors, a refreshing pool, and exceptional service, making it a perfect place to relax and prepare for the upcoming adventure.
The next stop was Sossusvlei, where I spent a few nights at the stunning and totally solar powered Wilderness Little Kulala Lodge. Nestled in the heart of the Namib Desert, this lodge offered breathtaking views of the iconic sand dunes and incredible desert landscapes.
Sand Dunes and Deadvlei
Exploring the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei was a surreal experience. Climbing to the top of the dunes and witnessing the vast desert panoramas was unforgettable. Deadvlei, with its stark white clay pan and ancient, dead camel thorn trees, added a dramatic contrast to the desert scenery and watching the dunes change color as the sun rose was mesmerizing.
Hot Air Ballooning
One of the trip's highlights was a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Namib Desert. Floating above the dunes as the sun cast its golden light over the landscape was magical. The serene beauty and tranquility of the experience were unmatched.
Next, I spent three nights at Wilderness Hoanib Camp, located in the remote Hoanib Valley. This camp is renowned for its luxurious accommodations and exceptional wildlife experiences.
Desert Adapted Wildlife
The Hoanib Valley is home to unique desert-adapted wildlife. I had the opportunity to see desert-adapted elephants, lions, cheetahs, and brown hyenas. These animals have evolved to survive in the harsh desert environment, and observing them in their natural habitat was fascinating.
Skeleton Coast Excursion
An excursion to the Skeleton Coast provided a glimpse into one of the most desolate and beautiful coastlines in the world. The combination of shipwrecks, windswept dunes, and the roaring Atlantic Ocean created a hauntingly beautiful landscape.
Wildlife Research Experience
One morning, I was extremely fortunate to join resident researchers as they captured and collared a brown hyena for ongoing research efforts. Witnessing the dedication and passion of the researchers and getting a close-up view of these elusive animals was a unique and inspiring experience.
Damaraland was the next destination, where I spent three nights at Wilderness Damaraland Camp (Desert Rhino camp was being refurbished). This area is known for its rugged beauty and rare desert-adapted black rhinos.
Tracking Black Rhinos on foot
Tracking desert-adapted black rhinos on foot was an exhilarating experience. Guided by expert trackers, we followed rhino tracks through the rocky terrain and had the privilege of observing these magnificent creatures up close. We were able to track two different rhinos each giving us a very different experience.
I also look forward to returning to see the newly refurbished Desert Rhino Camp, I’ve seen pictures and it looks amazing! The camp's focus on rhino conservation and its spectacular location, make it a must-visit.
The final leg of the journey took me to the remote Wilderness Serra Cafema, located along the Kunene River. This lodge offers a unique blend of luxury and cultural immersion and what a perfect ending to a marvelous adventure through this stunning country. Taking it slow enjoying just sitting with a cocktail along the river and indulging in some much-appreciated spa treatments, it allowed for true relaxation.
Himba Cultural Experience
Visiting a Himba village and interacting with the local villagers was a highlight of the trip. The Himba people are one of Namibia's last semi-nomadic tribes, and learning about their customs, traditions, and way of life was incredibly enriching. I don’t usually love these types of cultural experiences, but this is one of those truly authentic experiences, and so respectfully done.
Dune Buggy Adventures
Exploring the surrounding dunes in a dune buggy was an adrenaline-pumping experience. The vast, shifting sands provided a thrilling playground for off-road adventures.
Kunene River Boating
Boating along the Kunene River offered a peaceful contrast to the desert activities. We enjoyed sundowners on the Angolan side of the river, watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant hues as we toasted to an incredible journey.

From the luxury of Windhoek Luxury Suites to the remote beauty of Wilderness Serra Cafema Lodge, each stop on this journey offered something special.
